The impressive Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion at Attica’s southeastern tip is on the coastal road from Athens with a spectacular Saronic Gulf view while you pass the beautiful beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmenis, Varkiza and the excellent tourist resorts of Lagonissi, Saronida and Sounio.
- The Temple of Poseidon, which was made to worship the ancient Greek God of the sea is known for a mix of myth and historical facts, which date back from the time of the Odyssey, where King Menelaus stopped at Cape Sounion on his way back from Troy, or King Aegeus who drowned himself on that spot, giving his name to the sea
- Cape Sounion was also a strategic area for ancient Athens, controlling the sea passage to the Aegean Sea, Piraeus (the main port) and Lavrion, from where Athens mined its silver and became a major power in ancient times
- Once you arrive at the rocky cliff edge of Sounion, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Saronic Gulf Islands, next to the Temple of Poseidon, blending in the deep blue Aegean Sea, while walking in the steps of Lord Byron
