Arkadi – Rethymno & Chania
Passing Crete’s oldest part full of olive grooves arrive at the monastery of Arkadi, the most celebrated Cretan monastery and a monument to the dignity and spirit of the Cretans.
In 1866, while Crete was fighting for its liberation from Turkish subjugation, 300 fighters and 664 women and children took refuge in its buildings, siege by 15,000 Turkish soldiers. When all hope was lost for the besieged Cretans, they set fire to the powder magazine, choosing death rather than slavery.
The trip continues to Chania, the first capital of modern Crete, with its picturesque Venetian harbor. After lunch, wander through the «leather street» and the market hall which offers typical Cretan products.
We continue to Akrotiri where the Venizelos’ family grave is located, with an imposing view of the city and the surrounding countryside.
Shortly afterward we board the bus and head back to Herakleion.
